about

Juliette Lowe is a native of Old Deerfield and Junior at Deerfield Academy. She is an avid baker and athlete, and plans to study medicine in college. Lowe is keenly aware of the problems of food insecurity in Western Mass. Since Lowe was a young girl, she has helped fight hunger through baking and volunteering at a Community Meal in Greenfield and at the Center for Self Reliance where she stacks shelves and sorts inventory. It is there that she had the opportunity to get to know the people coming in for food, and has forged a strong bond to the hunger issue in the area.

“When I realized the large impact that Covid-19 was having on the local food banks,” says Lowe, “I knew I wanted to do something. In an area where unemployment already results in a massive strain on the capacity of our food banks, Covid-19 is creating an insatiable need for more food in our area.”

Lowe says she has learned a lot and has benefitted immensely from creating this initiative, “But, it is not about me. This is about our community, and doing whatever I can to ensure that nobody goes hungry in a time already filled with challenges. This is about coming together to not fix a problem,” says Lowe, “because I know that I cannot fix food insecurity as easily as all that, but at least make a dent instead of giving up before the fight has even begun.”
